Kumamoto Castle
Kumamoto Castle is a hilltop Japanese castle located in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It was a large and fortified castle. The castle tower is a concrete building rebuilt in 1960, but some annexed wooden buildings still remain. Kumamoto Castle, Himeji Castle, and Matsumoto Castle are known as one of the three major castles in Japan. Thirteen buildings in the castle are designated as important cultural properties.
Suizenji Jojuen Garden
In 1932 (the 9th year of Kanei) in the early days of Edo, Tadori Hosokawa, the first feudal lord of the Higo Hosokawa family, founded Suizenji here. Later, the Suizenji Temple was moved to another place, and a tea house was rebuilt on this land as the residence and garden passed down from generation to generation by the Hosokawa family. It was opened to the public after the Meiji era. By the time of Tsunatoshi Hosokawa, the third lord of the Kumamoto clan, the Momoyama-style garden was completed. Nearly 150 cherry blossom trees are planted along the promenade. Every year, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom from late March to early April, many tourists come to enjoy the cherry blossoms.
Takachiho Gorge
Selected as a famous water source in the "Hundred Selections of Famous Water" by the Environmental Agency. 60 tons of spring water at a normal temperature of 14°C gushes out every minute. The spring water from the water source can be retrieved freely, and heated spring water is also sold.
Shirakawa Suigen
Takachiho Gorge is a valley formed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Aso long ago. It is characterized by cliffs on both sides and Manai Waterfall with a drop of 17 meters. Together with the beautiful scenery, there are three bridges built on the same gorge, which is also the beauty of Takachiho Gorge.
