Guanyin Pavilion celebrates Guanyin's birthday three times a year on the 19th day of February, June and September of the lunar calendar. During these festivals, believers are busy burning incense and money, while making other offerings to the benevolent Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and the gods enshrined in the Avalokitesvara Pavilion. On the night of celebrating Guanyin's birthday, Chinese puppet shows or song and dance performances are usually presented.

Armenian Street

 

 

 

Armenia Street was originally called Malay Road, named after the Malay settlement that once stood nearby. Today, Malay culture still influences the local area, especially the Armenian Street at the westernmost end, which is also the location of the Penang Islamic Museum.

 

In 1808, the place was officially renamed Armenian Street by Armenian merchants who lived in Armenian Street. Armenian merchants started building the church in 1822, and the Sakis brothers built the Ion O Hotel. But the Armenians did not live there for a long time. When the church was built in 1937, most of the Armenians had left.

 

In the middle of the 19th century, the local Chinese began to live in Armenian Street and built Chinese guild halls nearby, such as Longshan Tangqiu Company. At the same time, Armenian Street became one of the strongholds of local Chinese secret societies, and a Hokkien-dominated club was also established there. As a result Armenian Street experienced many conflicts, known as the 1867 Penang Riots. At that time, the British government sent Indian troops to suppress and implement a military blockade, forcing the Chinese and Malay secret societies to end the conflict.

 

 

Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi

 

 

Cheah Company was also used as a stronghold to assist Sun Yat-sen and the Chinese Kuomintang in the revolution and handle Nanyang affairs from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. The evidence can be found in Cheah Company’s possession of three seals of the Chinese Kuomintang branch directly under the British Penang Island in Nanyang, including "instructions ", "Official Letter", and "Instructions" were discovered, so it can be speculated that among the members of Cheah Company at that time, there were cadres of the Chinese Nationalist Party in Penang.


In addition to being the family temple of the Cheah clan, Shidetang Cheah Company also left traces of running a school. In 1918, the Cheah clan established the Yucai School on the current site. Although it is only used as a historical site for tourists to visit, the Cheah clan is still very important to this day. The local Chinese provide educational and cultural assistance.
